Will the US Economy affect our Ingame Economy?

It used to be said that if America sneezed Europe would catch the cold. This no longer seems to be the case as Europe's financial sector appears to have largely sidestepped the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, with the continent's largest banks and insurers all reporting limited potential losses. France's Societe Generale reported total exposure of €479 million ($681 million), although it believes its final loss will be "a fraction" of this amount, and will depend on how Lehman Brothers' assets are sold.

Among the least exposed was Swedbank AB of Sweden, with a total unsecured exposure to Lehman Brothers of 202 million kroner ($29.8 million). Elsewhere in Europe, banks and insurers reported exposure to Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy of a similar scale: $300 million for UBS in Switzerland; €300 million ($427 million) for Axa, €405 million ($576 million) for BNP Paribas and €270 million ($384 million) for Credit Agricole in France; €350 million ($498 million) for Munich Re in Germany; and €11 million ($15.7 million) for Banco Santander in Spain.

Lehman had incurred losses of billions of dollars in the US mortgage market along with Merrill Lynch, also stung by the credit crunch. Merrill Lynch has agreed to be taken over by Bank of America to save grace. While Barclays PLC, the third-largest British bank, took advantage of Lehman's bankruptcy reorganization to reach a deal on Tuesday for Lehman's North American investment banking and trading operations for just $250 million (€175.7 million). Barclays also pounced on the opportunity to take up Lehman's New York headquarters and two data centers in New Jersey for, all subject to court and regulatory approval. It is also said that they may consider the Lehman Brothers assets and employees in Europe and Asia.

With more Americans heading further and further into danger repossession and with the US dollar strength at a low against the Euro, what can we expect to see in Entropia? With players from the U.S. dealing with the credit crunch we could be seeing less American players joining/playing and fueling our economy. Players from the U.S. could be considering long breaks from the game locking weapons, armor and other gear that otherwise may have low drop rates. The community may have to consider, with home repossession and unemployment are at a high currently in the United States, American players may be cashing out to aid them with bills. Pulling money out of our economy and thinning the loot pool.

Affects of the bad fortunes of America have still spark fears that it will have an adverse affects on the cost of living of the common players in Europe. This could mean we may be seeing European Players who have been affected by the collapse of Lehman Brothers either by their own investments or that of their financial institutes. As Banks lose money on investments made with the American companies, local people will feel the effects as lower lowering savings rates along with an increase on APR loans. Making it harder to earn on savings and push people further into debt on long term loans with high interest APRs such as home loans.

This may cause European players re-think their deposits into the game. European players, who have invested in the game, have also to consider that the U.S. dollar may drop again further putting their already invested PEDs at risk of being worth less than it had originally cost. Although, looking at he positive, some European players might see this as an opportunity to take advantage of the low cost of purchasing US dollars for PEDs and will make higher deposits into the game to purchase higher end gear. This may counter the loss of American sponsored PEDs and balance the economy, but again with prices of high-end gear and property already at a high the risks of the dollar dropping again may be too much for some players.

As a European Company, Mindark depend on the strength of the U.S. Dollar. A possible solution to the problem would be to change currency to the more stable and more valuable Euro. This would possibly instill a sense of security to members of the community who have heavily invested in Entropia. If Mindark so choose to change from the Dollar to the Euro both American and European players alike, who cash out, could benefit as their money would be worth more than what they had originally purchased it at. It would, however, spark outrage by American players who may not be able to afford the exchange rate of dollars to euro and may alienate the average American from being able to play even further.

Mindark have been approached via email, but have yet to comment.
